Grading Papillons At Becky's

Atlas Gets A Home

Atlas is a 10 month old rescued RR from Texas. Thanks to Celia Robinson, Atlas now has a forever home here in Mobile with Ursala and George. Today is his arrival day and he already seems to be right at home.

Ursala and Atlas have hit it off and he seems to know she's his new mom.

...and we think he's gonna be interested in the squirrels that live nearby.

What a handsome fella.

With two people all to himself, Atlas likes that he can get a hug whenever he wants.

Hey, Mom and Dad's friend really knows what puppies like....she brought me two yummy bones....I could hardly tear myself away to take photos....and two tasty chews, too. I'll save those for later!

R I P Taffy

Taffy was rescued by me, when I was working with RRRI. She was one year old then. Bless her heart, she had only known living outdoors in a pen, never went anywhere, except to the vet and had what we call "kennelosis"...anything other than what she knew scared her and she would either bolt away or be frozen to the spot.

This photo was taken after I had her about 7 months. I took her and my other dogs up to north Baldwin county to a 350 acre hunting area where my friend lived. I wondered if she would run off, but she loved my dogs and trusted me . We took them out through the woods and saw deer, squirrels, rabbits and even swam in the pond. Lordy! She had a wonderful time that day and was passed out in the backseat before we left the driveway. A happy, happy dog.

I had her 8 months rehabilitating her to be halfway normal. Even though she would always be afraid of new things, she loved it at my house and was normal as she could be. It took us 8 months to transition her over to her new home with the Romanos and, like here, home was fine, just the outside world was a scary place.

Taffy lost her fight with Mast Cell cancer at 10 years of age. She was good dog and always tried her best to please. We will miss you, sweet girl

Late Holiday wishes to you & yours. Hope life is treating you very well.

If you remember, we picked our little guy up Oct 29, 2005 and named him "Gunner". He is now 5 years old and still the love of our life. He's really a laid back dog....very much in line with the history of the hounds. He loves his comfort & sleeping....that's for sure. He's very well mannered and obedient. We take him out shopping, to street festivals, and to restaurants all the time.....basically any place that dogs are allowed.

We still get asked the same questions..."What kind of dog is he?", "How much does he weigh ?", "He's such a well mannered dog...how did you train him?"....and the list goes on. Just wanted to also let you know that we're thankful for him every day. He's the best thing that has happened to us and we're very blessed to have him in our family.

Her name is Taheratakuri! Let’s see ya’ll say that one! It means “Number One Red Dog” in aboriginal language. I’ll keep it simple and call her Kuri.

A friend of mine from New Zealand helped me find the words! There’s a lot of different tribal languages, and the same word can mean different things. So I hope I say it right. Doesn’t seem to bother Kuri, no matter how I say it.Kuri will never replace Jag, but she will take her place!

I wanted to share some photos from Angus's second birthday party. We had a Cinco de Mayo fiesta, and almost all of the dog attendees were Ridgebacks! We already knew a lot of RRs, but we have met even more now that the new NOLA City Bark has opened. The picture with the 2 RRs is Angus and Brucie.

Yes, Angus was Darla's singleton pup, born on May 5th, so now he's forever the "Cinco de Mayo" birthday boy! Love the little Mexican hat!

The other night at agility practice we had a party for Winona's Border Collie - Hope, on the occasion of her second MACH! Cake for the two leggers and dog cookies for the 4 leggers - what's more fun than that?

Cranberry is about 3.5 months old and Guy thought he was niffy.... of course, Guy likes to play with anyone who wants to and whoever met a puppy that wasn't full of vim and vigor and ready to romp?

Calling Home

Every once in awhile, I get a call or a post from a family who has adopted a dog from me. Sometimes they are letting me know the dog has passed away after a long life - yes, sad, but knowing that dog had a wonderful family who cared warms my heart....even if tears are rolling down my face.

Mostly they are folks who are sending me funny photos or telling me how wonderful their pets are and are thanking me....Well, it's ME who is thanking THEM! I can only give the dog it's start in life. It's them that take it from there and make fabulous things happen.

I got one of those posts today and I'm going to share it with you.

We adopted Gunner from you on 10/29/2005. As we are coming up on his 4^th birthday I wanted to take a moment and let you know he has exceeded all our expectations…as a dog, as a family member, as my only child !

He was one of your pet quality pups as he has a short ridge, but that doesn’t make him any less a Ridgeback! He truly is a family member and goes almost everywhere we do. He has a wonderful, lovey personality and his only downfall is that he’s a bedhog, thus his nickname of Snugglebug.

Gunner has excellent manners and has been a therapy dog visiting our local nursing home and especially brightening the days of my mother who has some physical disabilities. Most recently he passed the AKC Canine Good Citizenship test, which we took mostly for fun, as all the requirements have long been second nature for him. His picture was just selected to be the month of May dog for a 2010 calendar for a local organization here and I couldn’t be prouder. I joke that if I had a nickel for every time someone told me how handsome he is, we could have retired by now.

I remember the day you brought him out and said, here’s your dog and he went directly to Mark. Now I know why you are such a good breeder and selector of dog parents, you gave us exactly the best dog for us! From the bottom of my heart, thank you for Gunner and all the joy and happiness he brings us every day.

She is such a sweetie. Our obedience trainer said she had one of the best dispositions she had ever seen. We are so glad considering she was bit by a St. Bernard at 4+ months. We were worried she would be scared of other dogs, but not the case.

Ridgeback Play Date

I had to share some pics of the boys from yesterday. We went to the local park where so many dog owners use the baseball fields as a dog park. The city (Pensacola) is supposed to be building a dog park in the area but have not YET broken ground- no one is holding their breath!

Anyway here is Logan and Roadie who have become the best of friends. Not sure who initiates the play but this is the typical game.

One poses the question, "do you wanna play?" with a play bow. The other answers, "Of course I do!" w/ a jump slap. Then the boxing begins. They do this for a few moments until one breaks free and runs off- looking back as if to say, "Catch me if you can."

Logan is finally finding his place in the pack. He has really gotten better w. his recall. Yesterday at the park there were about 6 dogs all running around- I called him to come and he started to run toward me when another tried to play with him- he ran around that dog to get to me to sit in front of me. His trainer worked very hard w. me to master that skill. He is a great boy and we are getting CGC'd soon. And for Roadie- we have sent his paperwork off to Therapy Dog International for consideration as a therapy dog- he passed the test with flying colors so hopefully they'll see what a great dog he is!

Harley (my sister's Ridgeback) is here this weekend for a visit. The kids are having a blast- makes me want to get another one- a girl! I am outnumbered here :)

I am sending you some pics of Ina. We took a camping trip to North Carolina and the whole family loved it. Max is teaching Ina all the hiking tricks he learned in the Alps. She did well on the trail and thought sleeping in the tent was awesome - a dedicated snugglehound she is.

Fortunately we did not see black bears, but we did hike the highest mountain east of the Mississippi in Mt. Mitchell State Park.

One Legged Runner?

Guy had run across to the pecan tree and was waiting for another dog to come join him..... when they didn't, he started running back across the yard. This was the perfect opportunity to try the continuous shooting mode on my camera.

All I had to do was keep my finger pressed down on the shutter button and try and adjust the focus as he came near me. When I looked at the photos I had taken, EVERY one had him in the "standing on one leg" phase of his run! Guess he was just synchronized to that shutter speed!

At least this one was on just as he was putting down his right hind leg..

....and I finally got a right hind leg down... guess he was slowing down and I got the change of "leads" at the gallop!

Psychdelic Pond Critter

This "chicken necked" pond turtle had such vivid colors on its shell it was almost psychedelic ....

Country Roads

I went down a country road this morning while running some errands. I came across a ditch full of these yellow wildflowers. We use to have a lot of these in my neighborhood before it built up with houses - still are a few spots left. They have some kind of bean pod that pops when they are dried. While blooming, they attract a lot of humming birds, too.
Went by a couple of fields of cotton, but only one had some cotton popping out.

On the same road, there is a small farm with cows and horses and some bison. Luckily, the bison were taking a mid-day break up by the road when I came along. This bull is especially majestic... even lying down!

....and here's the rest of the family. There's the newest calf on the right.

Getting Restless

I want to go out and take pictures! Danged cloudy, left over rainy day from Gustav! I wandered around in the front trying for a photo of the Hummingbird, but it's too suspicious of me to sit still long enough. There was a passing butterfly, but I guess it thought I looked like a predator, too. So, the only thing I got a decent photo of was my garden "art" ball...... but, it you look real close, it looks like a woman standing off to the left side of me and the camera! Have I got a ghost????

I got a NEW camera! I was so thrilled....... by the time I'd figured out how to put it together, got the battery charged up and ran outside to take some photos, it was twilight already - not the best time of the day to test out your brand new camera.... but I looked over to the east and saw these clouds, all grays, whites and pinkish and - what the hay - I took the photo.... and I like it!

Thrilled with the result, I rushed in and took some photos inside with the flash. My dogs were not impressed, but they'd better get use to it.
